Ah yes... I love a good age-old debate. So this week I answer a reader's question about that...
Can anyone be a medium with hard work and practice or do you have to be born with the talent? I have heard conflicting statements from other mediums.
I ask because one medium I follow said that although we can all be sensitive to messages from guides and deceased loved ones, unless you are born a medium, you will not become one. Is this true?
Also, is it possible to be born a medium and not have known it? To suddenly one day (48 years LOL) discover you have some talent?
First of all I’d like to tackle part one of Dawn’s question:
"One medium I follow said that although we can all be sensitive to messages from guides and deceased loved ones, unless you are born a medium, you will not become one."
My one word answer: Poppycock.
Let’s start with a baseline truth.
We are all spirit. Spirit is within us and all around us. Each of us is essentially ‘spirit’ individualized. Spirit is inherent to our nature.
Some folks are quite conscious of their inherent spirit nature. Some are in the process of awakening to their spirit nature, while still others are not yet in touch with this fundamental aspect of their nature.
It doesn’t matter where anyone is on that spectrum, the inherent nature of each and every one of us is still spirit.
It is via this timeless, unchanging spirit within us that we connect with the spirit world around us.
Our ancient ancestors were once profoundly connected with both their own spirit nature and with the world of spirit all around them.
Unfortunately, over time, there has been a purposeful and concerted effort on the part of some forces in our world to eradicate both our knowledge of our spirit nature and our connection with the spirit world which is why the natural connection to both has been long lost to so many of us.
We have forgotten about this part of ourselves.
However, we are, at this time, collectively reconnecting with this aspect of ourselves more and more everyday.
This is very very good news!
So, for the sake of a “putting a finer point on it” illustration, let’s have some fun here and pretend that you are born with legs but you completely forget that you have them so you function as if without them.
Then one day you wake up to the realization that you have legs. Oh happy day! But because you have never used them they have atrophied and as such are not very useful to you at this point. You’ll need to figure out how they work, exercise them and build up their strength in order to be able to use them.
So you set about to do just that.
Then someone comes along and says “Well, you may have legs with which to walk, but unless you were born a walker you won’t be able to be one.”
Sounds kind of silly, right?
You’ve got legs but unless you were ‘born to walk’ then you won’t be able to?
That’s all that a medium does. She uses her ‘legs’ (insert her inherent spirit) to ‘walk’ (insert communicate with spirit).
You can do the very same with your inherent spirit.
Therefore, saying that one is “born a medium” is redundant.
We’re all spirit, born with the ability to connect with spirit.
So why do some mediums cling to the belief that you must be born a medium or else you can’t be one?
Well… the “have, have-not” belief can rear it’s ugly head just about anywhere. And it does. Even in the mediumship community.
Several of the teachers with whom I studied held this belief and enjoyed making sure that the class understood that they - the teachers - were natural mediums born with ‘the gift’.
Then this would happen: half of the class would sink into doubt and start to question whether they had ‘the gift’ and the other half were cocksure that they had to be ‘born mediums’.
Why purposefully interject doubt into the study of mediumship? Doubt is one of the biggest obstacles for many if not most of us in developing our connection with spirit.
Who does it serve to make statements like this to anyone who is feeling the call to explore her spirit and her connection with spirit and maybe even become a medium?
No one and nothing. Except, perhaps, the egos of those who hold fast to the belief that they are a born medium.
Now, perhaps what these mediums might actually mean when they are asserting that “unless you are born a medium then you will not become one” is that you will not become a professional or a practicing medium unless you are born one.
This is a different thing.
This is where hard work, practice, dedication and staying the course come in. Not everyone has the desire, patience or the perseverence to do all of the things it takes to get to the place where he or she can competently serve others in a mediumship practice. Or to get up day after day, week after week on a platform and bring through messages from spirit.
We are all equipped with the legs to walk or run but do we all have the desire and the dedication to stay the course to become an Olympic speed walker or runner?
You’ve got legs and if that’s what you want to do with them and you’re willing and determined to do what it takes to get there, you will.
You’ve got spirit inside of you so, if you are willing to work, practice and have the determination to do what it takes to become a practicing medium, you will.
You’ll unlock that gift within you.
Now to part two of Dawn’s question:
“Also, is it possible to be born a medium and not have known it? To suddenly one day (48 years LOL) discover you have some talent?”
As I have mentioned above many folks are still in the process of awakening to their spirit nature and still unaware that they, too, have what it takes to be a medium if they so choose.
Awakening to this truth can happen at any point in one’s life. Some awaken earlier in life and others later in life.
When it happens does not matter.
What does matter is that you cultivate your relationship with spirit in your own unique and special way.
What does matter is that you believe in you.
What does matter is that, if you want to become a medium, you have clarity of purpose, work your ‘muscles’ and take the necessary steps to follow through with your dream and unlock your gift.
Don’t give up your sovereignty, your power to achieve what you want to achieve or allow anyone else’s beliefs to hold you back.
