Today I am answering a reader's question:
I am trying to get going as a medium and I felt as though in the beginning it was coming so natural. Now, I feel like, I am just blocked. I am meditating every day. I am using crystals. I am reading every book I can get my hands on. Literally in the beginning, I was getting messages....now, I feel like nothing. I am even doubting who I thought my guides were. Any thoughts or guidance? Any help you could give would be great ! Thanks !
PS: I think you site is wonderful !
Great question, Jen! Let's sort this out, shall we? ;)
First of all you need to know that what you are experiencing is quite normal.
There is a certain cycle to mediumship development. I describe that cycle in three stages here:
The 3 Stages of Mediumship Development:
Stage 1: Beginner's mind: Excitement and enthusiasm
Welcome to mediumship development stage 1. It is soooo exciting to know that you have mediumship gifts that you can develop.
You are filled with great enthusiasm during this stage. You are excited, and jumping in full swing wanting to learn and absorb as much as you possibly can.
You are also in what I call Beginner's mind. You have no idea what to expect.
You are open.
As the Zen teacher Suzuki Roshi said: "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities..."
This is the stage where you really pop. Especially, I might add, if you have a natural resonance for mediumship and are choosing to develop your abilities because you are feeling called to do so.
I love working with students who know nothing about mediumship and are starting their development from ground zero.
They have no idea what they are doing. So they can do no wrong!
They are so excited to learn. They see spirit over here. They hear spirit over there. They receive so many wonderful messages. It all feels wonderful and so natural. They are discovering that they actually are a medium!
This is the awesome flow of beginner's mind.
And it feels so good.
But it can't - and won't last forever. Even though we think or expect that it should.
Which brings us to...
Stage 2: Blocks, doubts, limitations
After so much enthusiasm and beginner's success you often hit a wall...
Where you were getting messages - often quite easily - you now are not.
You feel blocked. Stiffled. Like you've lost any ability or traction that you thought you'd gained in Stage 1.
You may also experience doubt about yourself and your mediumship development.
You may start questioning everything from your ability to communicate with spirit, to your connection with your guides, to, well, everything.
This is totally normal. Totally natural. Totally part of the journey.
Instead of pushing against this, do your very best to embrace it. This is the time for you to step back for awhile and integrate the experiences that you have already been having.
It is a time to process and reflect on these experiences.
And, though I know this is hard to hear, this time is just as important as Stage 1.
It may feel as if your abilities have been taken away. They haven't.
It may feel as if your spirit guides have gone AWOL. They haven't.
Your abilities are taking a little break, slowing down or are even temporarily inactive - in a period of dormancy, as it were.
Your guides are there, still caring, still guiding, but also giving you the space that you need right now.
This time is best used to drop resistance, regroup, relax, contemplate, write in your journal, meditate without a goal in mind. To just be.
And be cool with where you are right now.
It is also a great time to read, learn, and gently gather more wisdom for your journey.
It is not a time to scramble and push yourself to try to "reclaim" your "lost abilities".
Because you haven't lost anything. Have patience. All is just fine.
The duration of Stage two is different for everyone. For some it is days, for others weeks or even months.
Some folks will completely walk away from their development during this stage. This possibility makes it an especially important time to reflect, meditate and contemplate what you are learning and where it all fits into your life.
Not that you need or should expect all the answers right away. The acts of reflection and contemplation will set something important in motion and the answers will arrive perfectly and exactly when they are meant to do so.
Be cool. You're you. You'll take your own time. Let it unfold.
Even famous, gifted British medium, Doris Stokes had a crisis of faith that resulted in her taking a number of years away from doing her mediumship. It even happens to the best of the best.
Stage 3: Deepening and Integration
Once you have moved through stage two, you come to what I call the Deepening and Integration stage.
This is where you get your juice back. Enthusiasm wriggles it's way back in.
You feel more positive about your development journey. You've learned some things during Stage 2 - about yourself, mediumship, the spirit world, patience - and you are ready to apply all of that in Stage 3.
You find yourself pulled towards the exact things - books, blogs, classes, mentoring, development circles, practice opportunities - that you need to help you deepen your development and integrate your experiences even more deeply.
Things start to gel for you and you start to see your mediumship development journey is the context of the greater whole of your life.
You approach your learning and practice with much greater confidence.
You start to apply techniques you've acquired and what you have learned to not only your mediumship but also your life as a whole.
You feel good about what you have chosen to do and uplifted at the prospect of using your mediumship to serve others in some way that is unique to you. You'll start to feel resonance with potentials and possibilities.
And there you go... mediumship development ups and downs distilled into three stages.
Remember that each of these stages is as important as the other.
Be wherever you are. Honor each stage as a valid and integral part of your journey.
Keep in mind that these stages are part of an ongoing cycle experienced by mediums. You will continue to move through, back and forth and between these three stages again and again on your mediumship journey.
It's all part of the deal. So cozy up!
