Yes... it happens. Sometimes a spirit takes up residence in your home. If you are feeling or sensing that you have a spirit in your home, it is not a time to panic, rather it is time to assess the situation, and your tolerance level for it, then take the proper actions to deal with the situation.
Though it is quite normal and natural to feel off balance, fearful or even concerned when you think that you might have a spirit visitor, the very best course of action is to remain calm and take some time to figure out what might actually be going on. It may not be as big a cause for concern as you think. This is because there are several different types of spirit visitors and you need to determine which type you are dealing with.
I categorize spirit visitors or squatters - as I affectionately call those spirits who want to hang around for a while - into three types:
1. Familiar spirits
2. Strange spirits
3. In betweens
1. Familiar spirits:
More often than not the visitor is the spirit of someone you know or had a connection with like your grandfather or your deceased Aunty Pat. You are generally dealing with this type of situation when you sense that a spirit is near or around you, but it feels ok and is less likely to stir up fear in you or be great cause for concern. There might be some spirit phenomena attached to it, but it is light and playful at best or mildly annoying at the worst, rather than troublesome. Examples of this would include lights flickering on and off, feeling tingles somewhere on your body, seeing the rocking chair gently rock when no one is sitting in it, feeling as if you are being gently touched by someone (and it feels ok to you), seeing something in your peripheral vision, perhaps hearing your name called out or whispered, and other similar experiences. The main point is that you are sensing a spirit presence but, overall it feels OK to you and is not causing you difficulty. Many folks are quite fine to let things be when they recognize that their spirit squatter is familiar to them and even end up welcoming their presence and developing a relationship with him or her. Sometimes, though, a familiar spirit can be cause for annoyance, especially if the person had annoying tendencies while alive, or is bent on bothering you because of some unfinished business he or she has with you from while he was alive. This is a very rare occurrence though and the good news is this can be dealt with and the spirit moved on and out of your space if you are having this type of experience. Keep in mind that often the good spirits are coming just to check in and make sure that you are OK and on track in your life, or provide some love and support from the spirit world if you are going through a difficult time, for example. They are usually completely harmless (the way they would have been in their physical life) and move on when 'their work is done here' so to speak.
2. Strange spirits:
Sometimes a spirit visitor is someone who is not known to you but rather a random ‘pop-in’, or perhaps, even the spirit of someone that is unhealthily attached to some part of the the property or home in which you are living, like a former owner of your house, for example. Things can be a little trickier when this is the case. An unknown spirit - especially one with an unhealthy attachment - usually has you and/or the other people in your household feeling uncomfortable or even outright fearful. (I say usually because I have come across a number of spirit strangers that were children when they passed into the spirit world and their energies were more gentle and playful- hence they did not frighten the people with whom they were living). This type of spirit may also exhibit one or more of the phenomena that I described above, but it will feel different than the experience of spirit phenomena of a loved one - usually feeling much heavier, or even inconvenient, or bothersome. If your spirit squatter is making you feel uncomfortable you might want to consider doing something about it.
In-betweens have not fully crossed over into the spirit world and find themselves ‘in-between’ the physical and the sprit world. They can be confused, frustrated or even angry, ultimately spreading that confusion, frustration and anger into the physical environment, significantly lowering the vibration of the space. They are usually in the space because of a connection that they had with it during their lifetime, and quite often they consider you to be the intruder. The movie “The Others” with Nicole Kidman is a good example of this type of situation. The phenomena that go along with the in-between is most often bothersome, troublesome and can be quite frightening. This is a spirit squatter that should definitely be dealt with and moved on and out of your space.
How to ‘get rid’ of spirit squatters that you don’t want around
Once you have decided that you want to takes steps to get rid of a spirit squatter there are things that you need to take into consideration. The first is you need to be clear about your boundaries with the spirit. Do you want the spirit to be gone? Really? I have worked with several folks through the years who called me in to clear their home of a spirit squatter, but it would keep coming back. Or would not leave at all. The reason? They were somewhat amused by the presence of the spirit and rather enjoyed the drama of the whole thing. Which is another way to say that they really did not want it to go at all. The spirit knew this and continued to hang around. Until you are really ready to get rid of a spirit squatter it will not move on, plain and simple.
The second consideration is vibration. Spirits that are cause for discomfort, fear or concern, especially in-betweens are often attracted to an area, or more than one area of low vibration in the home, space or even in the life of someone who lives in the space. It is important to address the overall vibration in conjunction with being clear that you want the sprit to go.
Steps to clearing out the spirit squatter:
1. Assess and work to raise the vibration of your home or space.
Clear any and all clutter and organize your space. If the spirit squatter tends to spend time in one specific area, pay particular attention to the vibration in that area doing all that you can to lighten it and raise the vibration. Squatters are attracted to lower vibrations and if you have a squatter that is causing trouble you can be sure that your space needs attention placed on raising the vibration beyond what would continue to be comfortable for the spirit. Here is a list of things that you can do:
The key to a higher vibration is that once you have taken steps to raise it, you must maintain it. Do this by keeping clutter under control, and bringing your attention approximately once a week to the other things that you have done to raise the vibe in order to keep those up, too.
2. Set your boundary with the familiars, strangers or in-betweens that you want to leave:
These thing are very important and absolutely necessary when setting your boundary with the spirit: You must KNOW it. SAY it. MEAN it.
If you do actually want the spirit to go then great. You know it. The next step is to say it: DO this firmly with the both the power of your voice and the force of your knowing that you DO NOT want the sprit there, behind you. Saying this out loud is best. And assert it as a statement, NOT a question. “Leave my home NOW” has power behind it. I would have a hard time saying no to that. So will a spirit. “Would you please leave my family and I alone and not bother us anymore?” does not carry anywhere near the same weight as the first statement. What if the spirit says “umm… no, I think I’ll stay.” You get the difference. Don’t ask. Tell! Make sure that the spirit knows it is not welcome. If need be conjure up the image of what you think the spirit would look like (or does or did look like, if you know who it is) and tell that mind’s eye image to “Leave NOW” and mean it. Speak with authority and be firm. You get to choose who you let into your home and who you do not - human OR spirit. Pretend you're telling a real person that you absolutely don’t want in your home to leave if you have to. Follow through by walking to the front door, escorting the spirit out of the space and closing the door firmly behind them. This action adds an extra 'oomph' to your assertion that the spirit must leave.
Another important aspect of setting the boundary is that all people who live in the space need to agree on what the boundary is. If everyone is not on the same page it will be harder, if not downright impossible, to get the spirit to go. If even one person is fine with the spirit being there, or wants the spirit to stay, the order to leave will be thwarted. So be sure to bring all the inhabitants of the home together and get on the same page before clearing addressing the spirit. Agree who can stay, if any spirit falls into this category - benign Aunty Pat, for example, who is a gentle guiding presence with a penchant for making the lights flicker might be allowed to stay - and who needs to go - like the spirit fellow who has a liking for that cluttered room in your basement and scares the begeezus out of everyone who goes down there. Then come together as a family, or whatever the case may be, and make the assertion that the spirit leave, together as a group. Be sure to make this a family affair for full effectiveness.
Once you have taken the above two steps, it is important to put attention towards maintaining the highest vibration that you can in the home. Your space should, fairly quickly, feel back to normal, light and comfortable to be in afterwards. If you feel that the spirit has not fully left the space or has come back, firmly repeat the process again. If your squatter is a particularly difficult one, you may have to consider calling in a professional medium who does space clearing services.
