Several summers ago my husband and I were house-sitting for someone we had just recently met.
One afternoon while there I was sitting quietly, doing some writing which sometimes puts me into a slightly altered state.
Out of the blue I became acutely aware of the strong smell of pot (yes, marijuana) coming from the one of the bedrooms.
I went immediately to investigate, thinking I was going to catch my husband in a naughty act.
Alas, when I got into the bedroom there was no one nor anything to be found there. Except the smell of pot. Clear as day in that bedroom.
There was no one else in the home at the time. My husband and I were staying by ourselves on the property which was located in a remote area well removed from any possibility of others smoking close by outside or near the house.
Feeling very curious now, I explored the whole room: under the bed, the closets, I even went outside to see if there was perhaps someone enjoying a doobie nearby that might be the potential source for this smell.
Nada, zip, zilch.
At this point my husband came into the bedroom wondering what the heck I was doing.
He couldn't smell a thing. And that's saying a lot because he has an amazing sense of smell.
It was then that I realized that I was probably dealing with a spirit experience. I was being sent an identifying smell from a spirit person who was hanging around.
Once I made this realization the smell immediately went away.
The ability to receive perceptions from spirit via one's sense of smell is known as clear smelling or clairalience. Spirit can and will send all kinds of odors, smells and scents in an attempt to help identify who he or she is and provide other evidential information. The medium receives this type of subtle smell perception via her clairalience.
Clairalience is also known by several other names including clairscent, clairgustance (which is actually clear tasting however some mediums lump these two clairs together), and clairodor.
I have received all kinds of smells during mediumship readings, everything from perfume, to cigar smoke, to popcorn, to bleach. Each time the smell has been an important part of the identification process of the communicating spirit.
For example, the bleach came through from a spirit man who had worked as a cleaner in a large factory. He used bleach every single day to wash down huge stainless steel drums and he would go home smelling like bleach. Though it didn't smell very good to me, it made perfect sense to the man the spirit had come to talk to.
Clairalience can provide a great deal of information about a spirit with a single scent or smell, making it a powerful evidential tool in a medium's skill set.
Clairalience can be experienced in a number of ways: via the internal sense of smell, much like clairvoyance (internal seeing) or clairaudience (internal hearing). In other words you are smelling the scent subjectively. Sometimes clairalience can also be an objective experience, one in which the medium can actually smell the odor or scent through her physical sense of smell.
This was my experience with the pot episode I shared with you above. I could actually physically smell it which is why I went on a tear looking for the source of the smell.
Clairalience can also be experienced in a very subtle way as the medium having the feeling that something does not "smell right" or smells "fishy" or "off". This often goes hand in hand with a warning or caution in a reading or a spirit communication.
Sometimes clairalience that comes through the physical sense of smell will also be experienced by others who are present, meaning they will smell it too. My husband and I have had this experience. That last house we lived in had a spirit man who would come by. He chain smoked cigarettes when he was alive. There were several times when both my husband and I, even when we were each in different rooms, could smell strong cigarette smoke in the house (neither one of us smokes). This is one of the ways that we both knew he was around.
I did a mediumship demonstration once where I was communicating with the spirit of a woman who sent me the strong smell of lilac perfume. It so happened that her niece was in the audience and she could smell the lilac perfume clear as day as well. We were the only two in the room who were having this clairalience experience.
Other times the medium will be the only one in the room that will experience the smell.
People who have recently lost a loved one will often inadvertently have clairalience experiences. I have crossed paths with many a person who could smell their recently deceased grandfather's pipe smoke or the smell of the oatmeal cookies that Aunt Sally used to make for the family. Often this experience is cast off as a coincidence, when it is very likely the gateway to a possible communication from the spirit loved one associated with the smell.
A very interesting thing about clairalience is that it is often experienced in formal seance situations as what is known as "group clairalience". This means that the people attending the seance all experience the smell being sent by sprit at the same time, as a group.
As a developing medium, if you don't already possess the gift of clairalience, or have not yet had the experience of clairlience during psychic work or spirit communication, you can develop it through exercises and practice.
You can do this by practicing bumping up your "smells" database by smelling all kinds of things including flowers, essential oils, and a multitude of other smells and scents around you. When you do smell an odor or scent, stop and take note, really taking in the experience with the whole of your being.
In other words... practice your smelling! :)
Doing this regularly helps you gradually open up, stretch and exercise your clairalience muscle. You can also practice smelling different scents, odors and smells then recreating those in your internal world in your mind the way that you would a sound with clairaudience practice, or an image with clairvoyance practice.
You can also ask spirit to send you an impression in the form of a smell. Then wait and see (smell!) what you get from spirit.
Spirit tends to use your own natural gifts and the experiences that you have had in your life, to communicate through you, so if you are someone who has had a lot of olfactory experiences or you have a very sensitive or pronounced sense of smell you are a good candidate for developing your clairalience.
You might want to consider developing your clairalience because this little known but very powerful clair, when impressed upon by spirit, can add much more nuance and depth to your mediumship readings leaving no room for doubt as to who is coming to speak through you!
Now back to my little house sitting story:
When my new friend, the owner of the home, came back I gingerly approached the topic letting her know I had smelled pot in the bedroom and did she know where it might have come from?
She smiled and said that no one except her brother ever smoked pot in or near the house. When he would come to visit he'd sneak off into his bedroom to have a toot every now and then.
She said this while pointing to the bedroom from which the pot smell had come.
She added that her brother had passed away a few years ago.
And that there were times when she actually felt she could sense his spirit presence in her home.
How 'bout that... :)
