What a strange blog headline...
If it got your attention, well I suppose that's good. It is a topic worthy of exploration in this day and age where many hang their shingle out with the word "Medium" on it. But are they really?
I heard the term "the New Mediumship" the other day. I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Mediumship is as old as the hills.
Sure mediumship has undergone some evolution over the years, but not that much.
The changes that have come have been for the better. Most mediums today practice what is known as mental mediumship rather than the more rigorous physical or trance versions of mediumship common in the 1800's. Mental mediumship means that the medium is receiving communication from spirit via her internal senses of sight, hearing, feeling and knowing, otherwise known as the clairs.
Physical mediumship, on the other hand, involves spirit using the medium's body to produce physical evidence of the presence of the spirit in the form of ectoplasm, levitations, and other physical manifestations, etc.
Three words: No. Thank. You.
Trance mediumship involves the spirit getting so close to the medium that the spirit actually speaks through the medium, taking her over while she is in a deep trance state. Often the medium's voice will change to sound just like that of the spirit communicating through her. Her face might also twist or contort into the face of the communicating spirit.
Three more words: Ummmmm... (sort of a word) No. Thanks.
By now you can see why most mediums prefer to practice mental mediumship. It takes energy but it doesn't take you right out of the picture or tax your body like the trance and physical styles do.
Mental mediumship is pretty simple, though the actual mechanics of it are not that well known to the general public. Proper mediumship is a three way connection: the medium, the spirit and the person who knows the spirit. So if I was doing a mediumship reading for you that would mean: you + me + a spirit you know conveying the message. I see, hear and / or feel the spirit with my internal senses. What I see, hear or feel from the spirit I share with you. You decide if what I am saying is accurate.
A medium is not reading YOUR energy. That is what a psychic does. A medium is acting as an intermediary conveying information between the spirit world and the physical world. The medium is having a conversation with someone you used to know who is now in the spirit world and relaying what she receives in that conversation back to you. You either know this spirit person and can validate the connection that has been made or do not know the spirit person and can let the medium know that, too.
How does the client / sitter / recipient know for certain, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he or she knows who the spirit person is that the medium is conversing with?
One word: Evidence.
Real mediums bring through clear and indisputable evidence from the spirit world. They are able to tell the sitter details about the spirit, such as how he died, what he liked to do, what his personality quirks were, where he loved to go and other pertinent and even DETAILS possibly little known to anyone other than the sitter, about his life.
"I have your grandfather here. Did your grandfather pass? Oh, Ok, he says he loves you and he misses you very much. He thought you were a really cute kid."
This is very general. There is no evidence here. No details. This could be anyone's grandfather for all the medium knows. If she actually even has a grandfather with her.
Then there's this:
"I have an older gentleman here who I feel died quite suddenly from a heart condition, feels like he had a heart attack. He is holding a little red teddy bear close to his heart. He's a quiet man, and I see him standing by a river and feel he liked to be by the water as much as he could. He shows me a small blue boat, with a white stripe painted on the side. I'm also hearing the name Nelly with this man. Does this make sense to you? It does? Ok, Thank you. This man is mentioning that you are getting married this year and wants you to know that he will be there wearing his favorite blue pinstripe suit."
Notice how this medium is bringing through specific details of what she sees, feels, knows and hears from the spirit. And she brings through a few good pieces of information before she stops to ask if it is understood. There is little room for doubt left here. The person sitting across the table either identifies with the details and knows this person or does not. And if she does know this person she'll be mighty happy and impressed at the detail that the medium has brought through.
Here's the equation:
Spirit known to the person / sitter / client + Evidence through Details + Clear Message = Mediumship
Call me old fashioned, but if you are sitting with someone who holds herself out as a medium doing mediumship readings she better be giving you information such as that demonstrated in the second example above, and absolutely NOT like in the first example. The information delivered the first way is either a cop out for a medium who could use some more training and practice, a misguided psychic reader who thinks she is doing mediumship or a fake, i.e. someone who is neither a psychic nor a medium and who is putting you on.
I'm not trying to be harsh, I just feel it is very important to make a clear distinction between someone who is a genuine medium communicating with spirit and someone who is not.
So if the "new mediumship" means that the medium can lapse in his or her abilities and fall back on picking up psychic information then passing that off as mediumship, then I say uh uh... no way.
Or if the "new mediumship" means that the medium is receiving information from other channels, say the client's spirit guides or from the angels, or the chakras or the auras, or the elementals, or fairies or the universal intelligence, or source energy, then I say, call yourself something other than a medium and make darn sure your client understands what it is you are doing so that his expectations align with what you are offering. Please do not pass that type of reading off as "mediumship".
Mediums create a much needed bridge from the physical world to the jam packed spirit world to give voice to the spirits of those we knew and loved when they were here on the earth.
The world needs good evidential mediums more now than ever.
Evidential mediumship is one of the most amazing forms of healing in the world today.
Good evidential mediums are worth their weight in gold.
There is nothing wrong, uncool, out of date or limiting about doing mediumship the good old fashioned, traditional, evidential, loved one in spirit to medium to you, healing kind of way.
That's mediumship. It's good work. Pure and simple.
Getting down off my soap box now and moving on over into my old wooden rocking chair. ;)
