Each of us comes into an awareness of our ability to communicate with spirit in our own unique way. Sometimes it's a smooth road. Sometimes... eh, not so much.
Mine was eh, not so much. In fact it was pretty extreme. My ability to communicate with spirit was catalyzed by severe head trauma sustained in a skiing accident.
For two solid weeks after the accident I was under a constant barrage from lower vibration spirits.
Three very kind and helpful mediums explained that because of my accident I had opened up so quickly and spontaneously that I appeared like a blip on a radar to lost souls desperately seeking a voice from the spirit world.
I was neither impressed nor comfortable with my introduction to the spirit world.
This kind of thing happens to a lot of people. And it is scary.
These lovely mediums also informed me that I, too, was a medium and could develop this gift should I choose to do so.
Gift, you say.... Hmmm....
I chose NOT to develop this so called gift. I was so freaked out by what had happened that I spent the next 20 years trying to shut it all down. If this was what being a medium was like I wanted no part of it.
At. All. Period. Full stop. :)
That attitude only served to make things more difficult for me. As the old saying goes "what you resist persists". Many nights I would be awakened by a talkative bedside spirit who would try to get me to be his or her medium. I would become very fearful and this only made things more difficult. I was very afraid that I was going to be taken over or something worse. Fear = low vibe = not good for much of anything. Especially when we are dealing with the spirit world.
Then a dear friend of mine, same age as me, passed away from breast cancer. I had shared my head trauma experience and the resulting spirit world chaos with her some years before.
Shortly after she died she came ever so cautiously to me in a dream. She was so thoughtful and kind so as not to scare me. She gave me a lovely message for her surviving partner, which I passed on. It was an amazing experience.
Then, some months later she came to me in the middle of the night in spirit form. I woke up and there she was. Even though I knew it was her I was still full of fear. She did the good friend thing and left me alone.
After that I felt terrible. My friend had come to me from the spirit world. And I had reacted in fear. We were good friends when she was alive.
What did I have to be afraid of?
I quickly realized that she was giving me a huge gift by coming to me in spirit. She was demonstrating what a gift it is to be able to be there for those in spirit. And what an honor that was.
And here's me pushing the spirit world away and delaying the development of my gift out of fear.
It was then and there that I surrendered and began to seek ways to learn mediumship and develop my gift. There wasn't much going on in the mainstream in the area of mediumship during those early years so it was a search that yielded very few results.
I eventually was able to join a lovely little spirit circle in a nearby town.
As I was driving to my first meeting, I was so afraid of what might happen. I thought I might actually be swallowed up by a spirit or something awful like that. Maybe never come back!
I, however, came home that night a changed woman. It was such a wonderful experience. Gradually I was taught how to connect properly and safely with the spirit world.
It changed my life.
This is precisely why I write the books I write and teach others how to develop their mediumship in sane, practical and grounded ways.
If you have had a rather rude awakening to the spirit world that has left you frightened and unsure as to how to proceed, know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
The very act of saying yes to your gift shifts the whole experience of spirit for the better.
Now that they've got your attention, which is all they were really trying to do anyway, the spirit world steps up to help you develop and grow.
They are so happy for you that they take you under their wings so you can soar.
However, once you say 'yes' and begin on a course to safely develop your gifts, you will need to let go of any attachment to or secret delight you derive from those dramatic spirit experiences.
Because you get back from the spirit world what you put out there.
So if you are ready to let go of the fear and allow your gift to safely integrate into your life, that is what you will get.
But if you secretly still enjoy those difficult spirit experiences, they'll continue.
It's up to you.
Once you learn how to properly connect with the spirit world, it all becomes so normal and natural.
Fear is replaced my joy. Confusion is replaced by confidence.
You begin to experience the wonderful gift that mediumship is meant to be.
You no longer have 'freaky' experiences, or, if you do on some rare occasion, you know exactly how to handle it.
You've got it rather than it's 'got' you.
So if you've been holding yourself back from developing your wonderful, unique gift of being able to connect with the spirit world, do yourself a big favor and take the steps to safely develop and integrate your gift.
You'll be glad you did. And so will spirit!
PS: There are many ways that you can start to open the door to the spirit world from reading blog articles like mine and reading books on the topic to attending spirit circles or mentoring one to one with an experienced teacher.
