People ask me all the time what is the number one thing they can do to develop their intuition and psychic and mediumship abilities. My answer: Meditate.
Then I hear the sighs, groans and protestations...
"But I can't meditate..."
"I can't sit still for very long."
"I have a really hard time stopping my mind from thinking..."
"I fuss and fidget when I meditate..."
And so on and so forth.
Etc. Etc. Etc... :)
Ok. Yes, meditation has a bad rap. But it IS good for you, your state of mind, your physical wellbeing and it is one of the most important aspects for developing your intuition and your ability to listen to that small still voice within that wants to steer you in the right direction and keep you on your true path.
So... how can meditation become bearable? Fuss Free? Fidget Free? Easy?? Fun???
By reading the following five ways then applying them to your meditation, that's how!
1. Start small
You do not have to spend an hour meditating to derive all the wonderful benefits. Ten or even five minutes works well too. One technique is to follow you breath for a count of 10 nice deep in and out breaths. Everyone has time for 10 breaths. You breath all day for goodness sake! Just make these ten breaths the ones that you put your focus and awareness on. You can do this while sitting at your work desk, on the bus, or while taking a walk. Once you have counted 10 breaths you are done. You have meditated and you hardly even tried. Oh... and don't be surprised if you actually find yourself wanting to count 10 more breaths when you are done. Then ten more... ;)
2. Don't TRY to meditate. Just let it happen naturally
One of my favorite meditation techniques is to take a break from my work day and make myself a cup of tea. I sit comfortably on the couch, sometimes cross-legged if I feel like it. Then I sit in silence and sip my tea. And with each sip I relax more and more. Before I know it I find myself quite naturally in a state of stillness. Read my lips.... mediation!
I often recommend this technique to those who think that they are hopeless at meditation. It can happen as you drink your cup of coffee in the morning. Or even as you are washing the dishes (yes I still wash dishes by hand. I highly recommend it as a natural state of meditation!). While you are soaking in the bath is another great time. Point is, we naturally drift into meditative states a number of times on any given day. Why not take advantage of them!
3. Lose yourself in a guided meditation
We all need some help now and then. There are many wonderful guided meditations available that take you on wonderful little journeys towards relaxation, inner reflection and other numerous themes. Listening to one of these, or even a calming piece of music is not cheating - I promise. You are putting yourself into a place of quiet and calm and that is meditation. So go ahead, pop a guided meditation onto your MP3 player, sit comfortably and go. Enjoy!
4. Shift your location
You do not have to sit stiffly on a zafutan in the middle of an all white room that is home to a zen gong, a trickling water fountain and some smooth rocks piled on top of each other in order to meditate. You don't even have to meditate in the same place each time. Shake it up. Go outside and sit by a tree, or on the bank of a river. Listen to the wind move through the leaves of a poplar tree. Watch the cheeky squirrels hiding their chestnuts. Sit on your wooden back deck that overlooks the ravine. Shift your location and enjoy new or different surroundings whenever you feel like it.
5. Find your personal reward in meditation
Rather than approaching it with an "I should meditate" attitude, which more often than not leads to meditation feeling boring or even painful, identify what it is that you actually do enjoy about meditation and make that your reward. What makes it a lovely experience for you? How good you feel when you are done? The soothing, delicious taste of that cup of tea? The feel of the soft breeze and warm sun on your face? The sense of peace and calm that you comes over you as you sit in silence? Identify what makes it worthwhile and makes it work for you and disregard the rest. After all, there are eleventy billion paths to bliss. What's yours?
Let me know how these work for you!
