Beginning student mediums often want to know how they are supposed to distinguish what is coming in via their spiritual senses, their clairs, from what they might be "making up" or imagining.
This is where discernment, otherwise known as the ability to know the difference, comes in.
Mediums gradually develop the gift of discernment over time as they grow and develop their ability to communicate with spirit.
Which is wonderful! And oh so useful... :)
But it is still nice to have some idea how you can tell the difference in the earlier stages of your development.
Let's start by defining the difference between imagination and clairvoyance:
Imagination can be defined as:
Clairvoyance is defined as:
Thank you to several online dictionaries for these "formal" definitions. :)
So how can you know whether what you are seeing in your mind's eye is arising from your mind, itself via your imagination or coming in via your clairvoyance?
Well... honestly that is something that is different for each and everyone of us. How your imagination works may be different than how mine works. There are no cut and dry recipes or ways to make this determination. It is really more of a process of coming to know yourself and how your own mind works.
I can, however, share with you some overall qualitative differences between imagination and clairvoyance plus share an experience that I have, personal to me, that lets me know when my clairvoyance is at work. It may or may not be true or the same for you, but I'm hoping that it will help you on your own journey of self discovery as a medium.
Here are three things I have found that distinguish the experience of clairvoyance from my imagination:
1. Imagination is active. Clairvoyance is passive.
Off the top a big difference between the two is imagination is an active process and clairvoyance is a passive process.
When you are using your imagination you are exerting control over that mind function.
When you are using your clairvoyance you are (at least you should be, hint, hint...!) in a passive state, with a mind open to receive.
You get into your passive state by...
To name only three.
You take the steps necessary to ready yourself, putting your mind into the receptive state required for your clairvoyance to be able to work effectively.
You are putting your mind out of action.
Ok so what if you get an image and you are not in your prepared passive / receptive state? How do you tell the difference then?
Generally speaking you will be able to route something created actively in your imagination back to a previous or current thought process.
There will be an intentionality about it.
Clairvoyant images will usually just "pop in", are usually not connected to a current or previous stream of thought and are often quite random and out of the blue.
And fast! They come in quickly, whereas images via imagination tend to take a little more time and your participation to create.
2. The quality of clairvoyant images will be different from the quality of the images your create in your imagination.
This is a "know thyself" scenario. It will be different for each medium, for each person.
This is an experience that I have recognized happens for me and helps me to know the difference:
For me clairvoyance has a direction towards which it points me in my mind.
When I use my imagination to create images those images tend to appear in the central region of my head or mind's eye.
My clairvoyance, on the other hand, pulls me in a certain direction inside my head, as if urging me to pay attention to it. To "look over HERE!"
For example if I imagine an older man, the image that I have created of that older man will appear in the centre of my head or my mind's eye.
When I am perceiving an older man during mediumship via my clairvoyance I will be pulled towards that image, which may appear, say in the upper right hand "corner" of my mind, or to the lower left.
This also often corresponds to where the spirit is situated in the room - for example, standing next to the loved one that spirit is coming in to give a message to.
I have the same experience when receiving a psychic clairvoyant perception, as well.
My clairvoyance tends to pull my attention towards what it is perceiving. Like it's saying "woo hoo... over here...!" Here's a bridge! Here's a car! Or whatever it is trying to show me.
You get the picture. Badoom ching...
That is a signature of my clairvoyance - one of the distinct ways that I know it is my clairvoyance at work and not my imagination.
I have come to know this about myself through years of practice.
This may not be the very same for you, however. Your clairvoyance may have another signature quality to it, that is specific to you.
That is for you to figure out.
The way to figure this out is to practice creating images with your imagination and see how that works for you. Take note of that.
Then practice doing clairvoyant readings. Sit with a friend, receive information from your friend, tell your friend what you are seeing in your mind's eye, then get feedback from your friend as to the accuracy of what you are seeing.
You will then start to see a pattern around how that which you are perceiving via your clairvoyance (which will be validated as accurate by your friend) differs from how your imagination creates images on demand.
Do this lots and lots and lots! That's how you get good.
3. The first and clearest image will be the way into your clairvoyance. It is most often the most important, the most accurate and received directly via your clairvoyance.
Here is a little secret for you...
Trusting that first image fully - not humming and hawing about whether or not it is your imagination - is your doorway into your clairvoyance.
Yes you heard it here!
From there images will just pop and you will find your groove and the clairvoyant information will continue to flow.
It is as if you have opened the door to your clairvoyance and things get juicier from there.
This is why newbies are often more accurate with their clairvoyant perceptions than folks who are on to stage two or three of their development.
They don't know any better. They just GO with what they are getting!
You just have to demonstrate to your clairvoyance that you trust it.
And your clairvoyance will be happy to serve you.
So there you go. Three ways that you can tell the difference between your imagination and your clairvoyance.
Not clairvoyant? No problem. You'll see your clair(s) in an upcoming blog post!
