Life is very busy. It keeps us in busy mode by default. Often we have to work to make it less busy.
So we set aside time to meditate, then something comes up and we feel bad because we didn't get 'round to it.
We try to make the space for quiet and introspection but somehow it just slips away...
We have the best of intentions and then life gets in the way.
For us to be whole, balanced and centered it is important that we touch in with our own spirits, and the Great spirit, each day even if only for a brief moment or two.
But where? How? When can we fit that in?
When you chop wood.
When you carry water.
When you drink coffee.
I do my best to take everyday tasks and slow them (and myself) down to the point where the very act of doing them connects me with spirit and the sacredness of my life.
I will most often do this while I am preparing food. I'll find myself becoming just a tad frustrated because I think my food prep isn't going as fast as it should, so I stop, remember to appreciate the pace just as it is then allow it to bring me back into the present moment, where all the magic and wonder of life resides.
Ok Clare, I get it. But, ahem... there is not a lot of wood to chop nor water to carry in MY day... And why the heck are you including coffee???
One morning about a month ago I found myself doing something a little different with my coffee routine. Every day my husband and I share our morning coffee together. We drink, talk and tell each other about our dreams. This particular morning he was sick in bed so I was left on my own.
As I sat by myself in silence, unsure of what to do all on my lonesome, I held my coffee cup in my hands and the aroma wafted up into my nose.
The smell was divine. I was in heaven...
...and on the cusp of taking a mundane, routine daily thing and turning it into a portal into sacred space.
It's amazing what one can do when left in silence on her own for her morning cup of coffee.
My next steps were truly inspired. I could feel the guidance of spirit on that quiet morning. I followed that guidance.
And I have taken those same steps every day since that day.
My morning coffee has shifted into something very special. The "most spiritual moment of my day" special.
And it only took three simple steps.
Here's how to transform your morning coffee ritual into something special:
Hold your warm cup of coffee in both of your hands. As if your hands are hugging the cup or mug. Before you take a drink, take a few seconds to savor the aroma. Breath in the deep, rich smell of the coffee. Taste the coffee with your nose. Feel the aroma move down the back of your throat. Completely take in your coffee without even taking a sip.
Now, with both hands raise your cup of coffee up towards the sky, holding it just slightly above and in front of your forehead. Close your eyes and say "Thank you".
To no one in particular.
To every one.
To the coffee.
To the plant.
To the maker of the coffee.
To anyone and anything that you feel to thank.
One great big "Thank you".
Now bring the cup of coffee back to your chest resting it over your heart chakra.
Say a prayer.
Whatever prayer you like.
I say the Lord's prayer. Any prayer will do. Say one that has meaning or feels good to you. Or make up your own prayer.
That's it. That's all it takes. You have just transformed the simple routine act of drinking coffee into something sacred. And quite possibly the most spiritual moment of your day.
It also works with tea, soy latte, chai latte, cappuccino, mocha-chino, americano, long black, short black, at home, drink in, take out, drive through... Wherever you're at and whatever you're having.
Let me know how you get on. :)
