We all want to be good at mediumship.
We all want to be "right".
We all strive to do the best we can do and be the best mediums we can be.
So today I'm going to throw that notion right (!) out the window.
What if I was to tell you (which means I will be telling you...) that wanting to be good, right, the best ever, actually gets in the way of your mediumship?
Stay with me here...
Successful mediumship absolutely depends on a clear and solid link with spirit.
It is our job as mediums to do everything we can to establish and maintain that solid link.
We meditate. We prepare. We set our highest and best intention for our work.
Then we get up there on that platform or sit across from our client and...
... we want to get it right. And for some of us - many of us, actually - the thought of needing to be right or fearing we'll be wrong - gets in the way of what we are actually there to do.
We set ourselves up to analyze and judge the importance of what we are going to say. We worry that we are going to be judged for what comes through.
Why is this a problem for our mediumship?
Because we are thinking about ourselves.
When we are concerned about how we are going to do in a reading or platform demonstration we're in our logical mind. We are coming at things from the personal perspective.
This is not the place from which we make a strong link with spirit.
Or any link with spirit for that matter. That's the part of our brain that actually works to stifle our connection with the spirit world.
To make the strong link with spirit we need to be in our "spirit" mind. Yes we have one of those!
The seat of our spirit mind is in our imaging side of the brain.
Our right brain.
Spirit uses our imagination to communicate with us.
Whenever we say "Oh gosh, what if I'm gonna sound stupid?" or even "Wow, that was a hit. I must be all that and a piece of cheese as a medium!", we are ingrained in our logical mind.
We've gone and jumped out of our spirit mind.
Simply put we are in our own way. Worrying we'll be wrong. Feeling all puffed up because we were "right".
When we're in our own way we are not linking with spirit. We are actually blocking our receptivity to spirit and our perceptions of what spirit is sending to us.
For the flow with spirit to be full throttle we need to get out of our own way.
How do we do that?
Let me give you my 3 steps for getting out of your own way and ensuring a more pure and direct connection with spirit during mediumship:
1. Enter into your mediumship with an attitude of openness and curiosity:
Prior to doing mediumship readings set your intention to be open to all and everything that spirit sends to you.
Then become curious about it all.
This keeps you out of wondering if you'll be good or get it right.
If you slip back into wondering, then take yourself back into a place of curiosity about what the heck might happen.
Think thoughts like:
"Whatever will spirit show me today?"
"I wonder what the spirits will have to say to my client today?"
"I cannot wait to see what the spirit world has in store for me today!"
Children are naturally curious. And they get stuff from the spirit world all the time! Good, solid stuff. :)
2. During your readings recognize when you have stepped into your logical mind (left brain), then step back into your spirit mind (right brain).
Ok, I know that it's not as simple as right brain versus left brain and being able to turn one off and the other on at will. But if you understand how they tend to work, you are that much further ahead and able to apply it to your mediumship.
When you feel yourself headed into worry or fear, or feeling stupid, or like you are not getting anything, recognize that you have stepped into you left brain. Nip it in the bud - in other words, stop all that - and put your complete focus back on the spirit world. This will automatically take you back into your right brain and back into your connection with spirit ready to receive and perceive what the spirit world is sending you.
This takes practice. As with everything, this gets easier the more you do it.
You have to be ruthless with yourself. You cannot indulge yourself with self-centered thoughts such as "what if I'm wrong?" or "If I say this I'll sound stupid!"
You have to be vigilant, catch it, then get right back to the business of spirit.
3. Trust your experience.
Share exactly what you perceive no matter how it might sound coming out of your mouth.
You've got to be gutsy to do this. Muster up all the guts that you've got and fully trust the experience that you are having with spirit.
Trust is THE linchpin.
If spirit shows you a rainbow arching over a purple banana, trust that. Share it with the audience or your client.
Just as you have perceived it from spirit.
Don't let Mr. Left Brain talk you out of it.
So there you go.
Now go ahead... get out of your way. Let me know how it goes!
