Mediumship development, my friends, takes time and, frankly, is not easy.
True and good evidential mediumship is not a skill to be learned as quickly as possible.
It takes years of practice and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Yup... that's the truth of it.
Wish it was different and ala-kazam poof we could all instantaneously be incredibly awesome, whiz bang, always accurate, always confident evidential mediums.
But it ain't.
And we can't.
There are obstacles which must be overcome, ebbs and flows which must be ridden out in order for you to get better and better as a medium.
Wondering how to increase your chances of sticking with it and learning how to be a kickass medium?
Here are 7 tips that I recommend to help you increase your success with your mediumship development and help make it easier:
1. Know why you're doing it
Getting to a deeper understanding of why you want to learn mediumship is a very important first step.
And the depth of your reason will matter.
When you've got a really good reason for wanting to learn mediumship you'll be filled with a sense of purpose that will help to motivate you and help you to get through the tough spots, the ups and downs and the obstacles that you are sure to face as all mediums do.
Reflect on your deeper motivation for wanting to learn mediumship.
Is it because you want to impress people with your ability to connect with the spirit world?
Because you want to be famous and on TV just like your favorite famous celebrity medium?
Because mediumship seems like the hot new thing and you'd like to give it a go?
These are reasons, for sure, but are unlikely to carry you through the tough bits of your development.
Is it because you want to serve spirit with a minimum of flash (i.e. TV's not even in your thoughts), a maximum of humility (i.e. you will check your ego at the door) and a thirst to learn and improve your skills and be the very best medium that you can be in order to bring through healing and guidance from the spirit world to the loved ones in the living.
Now... there's a darn good reason.
So do some self-reflection as to why you want to study mediumship.
Discover your reason.
Let's hope it's a good one!
2. Find practice partners
Can you learn mediumship on your own?
Yes... you can learn to open yourself up to spirit and receive messages from the spirit world on your own.
Many have done so simply by sitting in silence for long periods of time over very long periods of time.
This can be very effective.
And rather lonely.
Which is fine if you've got tons of self-discipline.
However, when you've got a partner or partners who are also dedicated to developing their own mediumship skills to learn and practice with, you get to support each other, motivate one another and push each other on to more practice, to try harder and to stick with it.
You've got someone to turn to when the going gets tough to help you get going.
Someone to provide you with invaluable feedback.
And when necessary (and it will be...) kick your ass. :)
(Note: I have lovingly kicked ass for many students on their mediumship development journey. If you want to know more about that you can email me HERE and find out!)
3. Have fun with it
I've spent the first part of this blog post telling you how much work, practice and dedication it takes to learn mediumship.
Now I'm telling you to have fun with it.
Go figure, eh?!
I do mean it, though.
Just because it is all those things does not mean you can't have fun with it.
So approach your mediumship development from a place of joy.
Get playful with spirit and spirit will get playful with you.
Seek to find your delight in learning mediumship and it will become so much easier.
4. Be like a child
Think about how children learn.
They go for it, aren't paralyzed with the fear of making mistakes. They lack inhibition, love to play and don't know the meaning of the word "can't" (they do learn that as they grow unfortunately...).
What if you were to approach learning mediumship with that kind of attitude?
What if you were to let go of your grown up inhibitions?
Just sayin'... :)
5. Leave your comfort zone
No matter how much you learn about mediumship you will never grow unless you put yourself out there.
You won't grow unless you are willing to take a chance on you and your mediumship ability.
You won't grow unless you are willing to leave your comfort zone and put yourself in potentially difficult or embarrassing situations - getting up on the podium in front of a roomful of people to do a demonstration, or get up in front of your development circle - and be willing to make mistakes, mess up and not be perfect.
The more often you do this the bigger you comfort zone gets and the more at ease you will become with connecting with spirit and doing mediumship.
6. Watch people do it
You can learn so much just by watching other mediums doing mediumship.
You can learn what to do.
You can also learn what not to do.
So get out there, go visit some of your local spiritualist churches and watch the mediums in action doing demonstrations at the Sunday message service.
Visit places such as Lilydale in New York and check out the mediums at Inspiration Stump, Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp in Florida or Camp Chesterfield in Indiana and watch the mediums doing their thing!
Check out YouTube for mediums doing mediumship. Here's a few that I recommend:
Life After Death: A Medium conducts a reading with a Non-Believer (A good example because of the amount of evidence that this medium provides to the skeptical sitter. That is the type of evidence you should be shooting for...)
Gordon Higginson Demonstration (one of Britains finest and best known mediums) Another demonstration of good evidential mediumship. He gives full names, street names and other details.)
Observe things like what kind of evidence they bring through, what type of gestures they make, how they move or don't move on the platform, whether they do client centered or spirit centered mediumship (more on this in an upcoming blog post!), how they are poised, etc.
As the old saying goes... watch and learn!
7. Jump in!
You'll never learn how to be a medium and communicate with spirit if you only hang around on the sidelines.
Yes... Surround yourself with the culture of mediumship. Do all of the things that I have offered you above.
But most importantly...
Get in the habit of DOING IT.
Practice every opportunity that you get.
Do readings for trusted friends and family members.
Practice receiving messages from spirit everyday, whether for yourself of for others that you know.
Don't just watch... do!
Put what you are learning into practice.
You won't know how connected to spirit you can be until you try.
What are you waiting for???? :)
