My mama gave me a lot of good advice when I was growing up.
Never go to bed angry at someone I love.
Make sure I'm always wearing clean underpants 'cuz I'll never know when I'll be in an accident.
Count to ten before responding to a perceived slight.
If I'm going to do a job then I'd better do it properly. And well.
Splash my face with cold water after washing to close the pores.
You know... guidance to help me navigate life. And close my facial pores.
But mama never told me what being a medium was going to be like. She never told me what it takes to be a medium.
Did yours? I didn't think so.
Come to mama 'cuz I've got five important and useful things to tell you about being a medium that yo mama never told you...
1. There's gonna be days...
Being a medium has it's ups and it's downs.
You'll shine one day. Feel defeated the next.
You'll have a hard won, fully booked day of clients and then pray they all cancel because you forget how to even spell the word "confidence".
You'll have moments during your readings when you are so effortlessly tuned into spirit that you feel like you're flying. Then moments when you feel very awkward and wonder why the heck you ever decided to do this spirit communication stuff at all.
You will run the gamut between feeling gifted and feeling goofy.
Between "THIS is my calling!" and "WHAT was I thinking?"
It all goes with territory. As a medium you've gotta role with the punches.
But those readings, the ones where you know you've helped someone, brought through healing words of encouragement, connected someone to their love in spirit... Allow those readings to boost your calling as a medium.
They are the ones that keep you going. Let 'em!
2. It ain't about you...
You may feel like being a medium makes you all that and piece of cheese. But here's the news...
You're just the medium.
It's pretty simple. Your job is to listen to spirit and pass along their messages. To trust spirit, pass onto the recipient what comes to you and not be afraid to do so or be worried that you'll get it wrong.
Your job is to give a voice to the spirit world. To serve spirit. Period.
No need to be attached to, swept up by or personally invested in what you are doing.
Cuz it's not about you.
Ever seen a postal delivery person take credit for delivering a letter?
3. This mediumship-y thing-y ain't a destination. It's a journey.
You can't just read a few books, take a few classes or attend a few spirit circle nights and then... allakazam, **poof** >> > you're a medium!
Being a medium is a journey.
A life long journey for many.
Not a sport for dabblers. Nor the faint of heart.
It takes lots of practice, commitment and dedication. And just when you think "BAM" you've got it, it... yup... takes more practice, commitment and dedication.
It also takes a willingness and a commitment to actively grow in your own life both personally and spiritually.
There's no sitting back on your laurels as a medium. Especially if you want to be a good one.
4. Ain't no such thing as a perfect medium.
If you are striving to have every single thing that comes out of your mouth from the spirit world be instantly embraced and validated by every recipient, over and over again, every time single then think again.
There ain't no such thing as a perfect medium.
Things get lost in translation. Wires get crossed. I have said many times that communicating with spirit people is like trying to talk to someone through a two foot thick concrete wall. Sometimes it's not always clear. Sometimes there needs to be some "no's" before you get to the "yes's". Keeps you on your toes.
But here's the deal... even the famous TV mediums don't always get it right off the top. It LOOKS like they always get it all right because of a nifty little trick called editing. I've delivered messages alongside high profile and famous mediums. They were just like the rest of us, sometimes receiving instant validation, sometimes not.
That's the way the cookie crumbles for every medium.
5. Just be yo'self...
Speaking of famous mediums.. perhaps you have one or two or more you admire greatly. And would like to imitate.
Just be yo'self.
You'll be happier and so will your clients.
By all means watch your favorite mediums, study how they do it and learn. That's a great way to get better yourself.
However, let Teresa Caputo be TC. You bring your own unique style to your mediumship.
Because when you put YOU in your mediumship you will attract the people who want to be have a reading with YOU.
And you will attract the spirits that want to work with YOU.
There you go!
Why didn't our mamas tell us these things? Because most of our mamas weren't mediums.
But they were incredibly psychic.
That's why we got in trouble a lot...
